10 Types of Heavy Equipment Used for Earthwork In Construction, and Mining

An Excavation contractor needs to use several heavy equipments, & machinery, as per the site requirements, and here is the information on the functioning, uses, types, and specialties of excavators, backhoes, backhoe loaders, bulldozers, dozer, trenching machines, digger machinery, earth moving machinery, and loaders.

1. Excavators

Excavators are used by earthmoving contractors for demolition, and river dredging. Excavators have a long arm with a bucket that rotates 360 degrees and a cabin for the operator.

An excavator is a construction machine used in construction, especially for the excavation & removal of earth materials. It is also called the digger. It can also dig and pick up soil materials & move them to another location by the use of a bucket. It is also used to measure the depth of the road level.

Excavator types include crawler, towed excavators, rail excavators, walk, or wheeled excavators, with the latter being preferred in Civil Engineering work due to their smaller size, which is advantageous in urban areas.

Seopearls displays service providers for a wide range of products and services related to excavator hire and sales, including hydraulic excavators, telescopic boom pumps, hydraulic power units, Long-reach excavators,  hydraulic breaker pumps, hydraulic jacks and booms, hydraulic hammers, demolition hammers, and heads, trench breakers, leveling hammers, the wheel excavators, the hydraulic excavators, the backhoe excavator, and the heavy-duty excavators, backhoe, mini digger, crawler, and radial arm drills, crawler tractors and wheel loaders. They can be supplied with ripper cylinders in the bucket or on the boom for ripping, teeth for cutting, and teeth for grabbing objects.

Excavators are also used in forestry, to fell trees and lift them out. Track-type excavators are often preferred for this task as they are lower to the ground, reducing the pull of the trees on the boom and reducing the risk of damage to trees being felled.

These machines are primarily used to dig trenches and foundation holes but can be used for other things like demolition, trenching, and so on. The excavator generally has a bucket on the end of the arm that is used to dig earth or break concrete and other hard material. There are several types of bucket attachments.

Wheel Excavators

The wheel excavators are ideal for digging in hard or rocky soils. This type of excavator is used for digging trenches for gas or water pipelines, utility lines, and rail tracks. In addition to that, it can be used to dig foundations for building roads and bridges. It is also used in areas with rocky terrain.

Long-reach Excavators

Long-reach excavators come in a variety of sizes, depending on your needs.  Long-reach excavators appeared to be the only option for reaching the building’s upper levels, as firefighters attempted to douse the blaze.

Long-reach excavators operate alongside other machines to help build residential and commercial buildings. They also operate in industries such as mines, where they dig shafts and caverns. Because construction and other industries have become larger and more complex, long-reach shovels have become more popular.

Long-reach excavator is generally equipped with three tools. This includes a dipper with a bucket, a clamshell bucket, and a backhoe. For larger projects, opt for mid-sized and large long-reach excavators, which can dig deeper and longer trenches faster than smaller ones. Mini excavators are more efficient, safer, and faster than standard excavators. This is due to their long boom arms, better ergonomic design of the cab, and automatic boom and stick, as well as automation of digging volume.

In addition to these functions, the machines are equipped with a function of “Power-to-Dozer”. This allows the excavator to move forward and shift the load on the bucket. Long-reach excavators are designed to operate at depths of 8 to 10 m (25 to 35 ft) and are particularly useful in multi-storeyed buildings, where they can be used to excavate the ground floor whilst another two-storeyed building is being constructed. They are very popular in high-rise construction because they can excavate the basement which is often a tricky job.

Mini Excavators

Compact long-reach excavators are ideal for small digging jobs, as are compact and mini excavators, which are also compact and easy to transport. Mini excavators are great for digging narrow trenches and digging in small spaces. Mini Excavator is an excellent excavator for light to medium-sized projects, especially when you need the flexibility that a mini excavator can offer you.

The JCB 50Z can be used for a variety of site work and is suitable for demolition, piling, landscaping, transport, and excavation. The frame of the JCB 50Z is made of high-strength composites to allow for minimal wear on the structure over time. The JCB 50Z has been designed to be easy to use, with a low-positioned cab to reduce driver fatigue.

It has been designed to have a compact footprint to cope with the tight spaces found in the Asian construction industry. Its design was also built with a high level of safety in mind, so both inexperienced and experienced operators can use it with ease. The JCB 50Z is currently being sold in over 60 countries worldwide and has won many construction awards for its excellent performance and high levels of safety.

A number of distinctive features set it apart from other compact excavators of its time. The aim of these features was to give it a larger capacity, but without the penalties that usually accompanied the power and movement associated with such features.

Hitachi Excavators

The design of the Hitachi EX700D ‘Drive System’ really delivers value, high reliability, and mobility. Excavators should be easy to operate, simple to maintain, and easy to remove and replace components. Each time the boom cycles out and returns for loading, this is a cycle time opportunity. So is each cycle time the excavator lifts the bucket. So is each time the arm reaches out to clear an obstacle. Each of these adds up to lost productivity.

Like the new XA Series, the popular X Series is a highly reliable excavator that performs well in any operation. The X Series has been the standard for quality, value, and innovation for many years across many markets.
The XA Series incorporates the latest in excavator technology. Advanced operator aids help operators get the most from every shift. , and smooth boom articulation. This signature design from Tenova will give you maximum performance and the lowest cost per cubic meter.

“New ways of doing things allow us to become more efficient than ever before. As part of our approach to continuous improvement, we are always identifying opportunities to refine our processes and develop new ways to do things. It’s about staying ahead of the curve. We take an innovative approach and that’s what sets us apart from the rest, and machine tool-like coordination, you can get more efficiency from each and every digging cycle. And it’s not just the machine.

With a fleet of excavators that are custom-engineered to help you get the job done, you’ll get more from your people too. Excavators for all applications.  You can select an excavator that is engineered for low noise and vibration, and with a slim design, you can move more material faster and more effectively, with a smaller fleet. The Caterpillar fuel-efficient machine designs for mining also provide substantial fuel savings: faster cycle times, longer product life, and less maintenance cost.

Hydraulic Excavator

The main components of hydraulic excavators are the engine, the power take-off unit, and the hydraulic system, which is used to control the movement of the excavator, such as the boom, the stick, and the bucket. The boom is used to lift the material, while the stick and the bucket are used to hold and move it. Also referred to as, the base, the bucket, the arm, the stick, and the cab.

The base supports the whole machine. It is made up of a heavy-duty three-point hitch which enables it to be attached to a tractor for its power source. The three-point hitch is used in steering and moving the excavator’s boom. The base is also connected to two or four outriggers that provide support and stability to the unit.

Each component is an important factor in the machine and has to be precisely designed and manufactured so that the excavator can achieve optimum performance and quality. If a component breaks down while operating the excavator, it can lead to serious injuries or even death to the operator and bystanders. Therefore, it is important to know the names of these components in different excavators to be able to safely operate them.

The engine of the excavator is typically a liquid-cooled diesel engine.

The two major types of the mouth of the excavator are swinging and telescoping.
The swinging excavator uses a pivot point to swing the arm from side to side, while the telescoping one uses a sliding joint system to expand and contract the arm from a longer to a shorter length.

The hydraulic system gives out more than 1,000 psi of pressure in order to move the excavator. The excavator is designed in such a way that it uses the motion of the arm to control the movement while it uses the hydraulic system to control the force put upon the arm by the engine.

Hydraulic excavators are also used in various local applications such as on farms to harvest crops, on construction sites, and in landfill operations. The hydraulic excavator is designed to provide high-quality excavation work by allowing powerful operations to be carried out with ease.

Backhoes

Backhoes are a type of excavator that is used for digging, as well as, grading and other types of earth-moving projects. They have a long, toothed arm on a piece of rotating equipment that is used to dig or move material, or to move and position heavy objects. They are all-terrain vehicles that are useful in bulldozer work.

2. Backhoe Loaders

The backhoe loader excavation machine consists of two sides with a digging bucket on one side and a loader attachment on the opposite side. The components of a backhoe loader include the bucket, stick, backhoe, boom, cab, tractor, and loader.

Backhoe Loaders have a boom on the front and a bucket on the back. In the middle of the machine is a separate, movable platform called the carriage that moves back and forth along a fixed base frame. The bucket tilts, and that tilting is controlled by the operator or by the machine’s controls.

Most Backhoes have a rotating arm with a bucket at the end, but some have a clam-shell bucket that allows the bucket to rotate 360 degrees or a horizontal arm with a bucket.

What all Backhoe Loaders have in common is that they are powered by a diesel engine, and most (but not all) of them have a backhoe attachment as well.  The Backhoe Loader is very similar in appearance to the Excavator and is often mistaken for one.

Most backhoes are built with a loader with a grapple arm that is attached to a boom. The boom has a hydraulic motor that controls the boom arms and the hydraulic cylinders provide power to the loader’s arm. The hydraulic cylinders control the extension and retraction of the boom arm.

Applications of Backhoe Loaders

Backhoe loaders have a variety of applications like construction, industrial, mining, and underground utility, and are used for digging, excavating, and trenching purposes. There are hundreds of models in production to meet the needs of various industries.

They have a variety of uses including, but not limited to utility line work, telecommunications, building construction, municipal work, landscaping, and road construction.  These are machines used by contractors and operators who need the versatility of a vehicle that can be used interchangeably in many constructions and material handling applications. These machines are becoming more and more popular in construction, because they make digging, digging trenches, and excavating work easier.

Compact Track Loaders

Compact track loaders are designed to handle loads up to 6000lbs. They are able to maneuver on small construction projects and even in tight areas around homes, buildings, and more.

Wheel Loaders

Wheel Loaders differ from Backhoe Loaders in that they are used for unloading and transporting material instead of digging and carrying.

3. Trenching Machine

The term “trenching” usually refers to removing the earth using a trencher or backhoe. Trenching is digging a narrow trench into the ground, from one point to another. If the trench has a small or narrow opening, it is called a narrow trench. A trench with a larger opening is called a wide trench. Trenching needs to be done properly, so you can have an almost invisible wall or walkway.

Trenching machines aka trenches are used for trenching. Two types of trenches include wheel trenches and chain trenches. Both these machines can be equipped with a variety of trencher heads depending on the type of soil conditions to be encountered.

Chain Trenchers

It has a chain of teeth that rotates, on a cutting wheel that runs on the ground, slices the ground, and digs deep trenches. The chain trencher has a V-shaped blade that rotates in the inclined plane. The depth of the cut is determined by the pitch of the teeth. The chain of the trenching machine is driven by the engine of the machine to excavate.

These are often used for trenching through tough ground conditions. This type of trencher is commonly used to bury cables, pipelines, and wires. It is ideal for trenching in areas with hard soil.

 Wheeled trenchers

Wheeled trenchers on the other hand contain a drum that is used for excavation, usually used to excavate large areas. Wheeled trenchers are mounted on wheels that are driven by a separate engine.  This system is usually set up by a professional to ensure it is used properly. Most wheeled trenchers have a gas or electric motor to run the machine. Some have hydraulics and others have a piston. Wheeled trenchers are used in areas with soft soil and are also equipped with a cutting wheel.

The wheeled type is equipped with wheels and a frame. These are easy to handle and highly mobile.

The trenched area is smoothed with a raker. These are also of two types namely fixed blade rakers and floating blade rakers. Wheel trenchers possess a small machine at wheels that cut the soil and prepare the trench for pipes.

Advantages of trenching

Trenching services are to compose, grade, and excavate trenches of all sizes and shapes in concrete, rock, and other compact materials. Trenching services are affordable as compared to other methods of laying pipes.

Methods of Executing Utility Works

  1. Trenching into the ground, laying the cable, then filling the trench back in and compacting it. This gives a fast completion of the work. However, a big problem with this method is that it leaves cable exposed at the bottom of the trench. This makes it very easy for someone to just scoop the cable out of the trench.
  2. Trenches are dug using either open-side or closed-side shoring systems, running the length of the structure. A trench box is set in the trench, filled with concrete and steel reinforcing bars, and then covered with a thin layer of concrete. A precast concrete pile is installed in each hole, and then the trench is filled with concrete. The rebar is then bent to bear against the pile, giving it additional strength. Soil is backfilled and compacted against the sides of the beam to ensure that it remains secure.
  3. Make a trench, followed by laying brick or retaining wall blocks in this trench. Then you fill the trench back up with dirt. Trenching is good for small areas that can’t be reached with a wheelbarrow and level.
  4. Digging a trench into the ground and then placing a plastic pipe into the trench. The pipe should be horizontal in the trench, and it should extend a few feet beyond one end of the trench so that it can be connected to a downspout or gutter.

Applications of Trenching machine

Trenchers are used for laying underground utility cables, and construction building compound walls. Trenching method is used in order to lay an underground drainage pipe that can transport the rainwater from your roof to the rainwater field or a storage tank, pipeline laying, and cable laying.

4. Dozer / Bulldozer

A bulldozer is heavy equipment usually used in construction work and for ground clearance (for example, in road building). The bulldozer’s wide blade is pushed through the loose material to cut it, push it or remove it to clear the area. Bulldozers are often equipped with a steel track to allow them to work in areas where there is a risk of striking rocks and other hidden hazards. It is used to move earth to make way for a building or road and can be pushed up and down the earth.

Dozers are distinguished from construction equipment by their size and their extensive use of a pneumatic tire for movement. The word dozer is an Americanism that arose from the word doze, meaning “to idle”. The word “bulldozer” (referring to the large front end) dates from 1911, and “bulldozer” is first recorded in 1923 and originates from a dialectal form of “bull”.

Bulldozers are usually powered by diesel engines, but some are powered by electric motors. The bulldozer is the second most recognizable construction equipment image next to the mechanical excavator. A bulldozer blade consists of a large metal plate on the front, with an attached shank called the tool carrier bolted to it. The plate is usually tilted 45 degrees, and the lower edge of the blade is sharpened to allow it to cut through dirt and rock.

Bulldozers can be used for a wide variety of tasks, including earthwork, trenching, demolition of buildings and other structures, timbering and log-felling, road building and leveling, digging ditches, and moving and grading of material. Bulldozers have been widely adapted to meet the needs of various construction projects.

5. Graders

Heavy construction equipment includes graders, which are designed to level the soil surface. Graders (also known as motor graders or road graders) are prominently used in the construction industry. Graders have a motor, blade, and platform. The long blade can create a flat surface by flattening the soil, removing the dirt, and snow on the surface, and fixing the soil. The blade is included in the motor graders as it is used for cutting. The blade of the push grader is similar to the rotary blade and it is powered either by a single engine or by two of them depending on the model, it may be hydraulically steered and operated. The operator cabin is provided with functional controls. The use of motor graders is increasing day by day as it makes the construction and repair process much easier and quicker. The machine can work on any type of soil. It is used by many contractors and owners of companies in rural areas.

Types of Graders

There are different types of motor graders used in construction. The different types include self-propelled grader, tracked grader, and wheeled grader. The wheeled grader is very common in construction as it is lightweight, portable, and easy to use. Wheeled graders generally come in three types; wheeled motor grader, wheeled trailing grader, and wheeled finish grader.

Caterpillar Motor Grader

The Caterpillar motor graders are used for the construction of roads. It is mainly used for grading the soil surface. Applications of caterpillar motor grader are leveling and clearing of roads, graded soil design, incision and planting of trees, planting of grasses, and various other applications around the yard.

6. Dragline Excavator

A dragline excavator consists of a long boom and a bucket for digging located at the bottom. It can be portable or stationary, with a boom and various attachments, which are removable as per the excavation requirement.

A dragline excavator is heavy machine equipment used in road construction and also is considered one of the important pieces of equipment in constructing dams, for underwater digging functions. It is also used to build tunnels, basements, foundations, and other structures to also function to remove dirt in the water.

7. Bucket Wheel Excavators

The bucket wheel excavator is sometimes also referred to by the acronym BWE. It features a large bucket wheel at the front with a continuous mining machine and an auxiliary power unit at the rear. This is a heavy equipment machine with the ability to load and unload their own excavations onto trucks or conveyors.

Primarily used for surface mining, the bucket wheel excavator is designed to operate in a semi-automated manner, although it requires a crew of two to operate safely. The BWE is usually employed for final size development, loaded haulage, and stockpile preparation. Buckets in a modern BWE are generally made of aluminum-lithium alloy, although older machines may use steel buckets or even wooden ones. BWEs are used for the efficient movement of overburden and rock for open pit mines.

The machine is used for the purpose of excavating or grading large amounts of overburden or underground. These machines are commonly found in large surface mining operations. Some of the largest BWEs are used on open-pit mine sites, others are most commonly found inside underground coal mines. BWEs have been in existence since 1916, the beginning of the large surface mining era, and were used to dig trenches for hauling coal. The first BWEs were steam-powered, but today diesel and gas are most commonly used for power.

High, low and bucket wheel excavators are types of excavators that are used for different purposes. High wheel excavator which is also called a ‘wheel shovel’, has been developed from various types of machinery.

It has a boom, a carrier as well as a powerhouse and it may also have a shovel and a wheel loader. The boom is used to carry the soil away while the carrier picks it up. The carrier is attached with a shovel at the front and a wheel-loader at the back, the wheel loader is used to pick up and transport the excavated soil.

BWEs are used in the mining of coal, iron, copper, and uranium. BWEs are used in the search for metals and minerals and to stabilize land for construction.

8. Loaders

Loader is a heavy equipment, which is powered by a diesel engine. It has a large-sized bucket in the front position to lift the material from the earth. This bucket is attached to the hydraulic cylinder. Loaders are used to lift the material and they can also be used to perform grading works and also to perform trenching works on the construction site. The bucket can carry heavy material and move it to the required place.

There are many types of loaders available in the market including wheeled loaders, undercarriage, and tracked loaders. The wheeled loader is the most popular and widely used type of loader on the construction site. The wheeled loader is the most popular and widely used type of loader on the construction site. It comes in a variety of sizes and styles.

Types of Loaders Available

There are several types of loaders available in the market. It ranges from the front loader, wheel loader, wheeled scraper, backhoe loader, crawler loader, etc. But a finishing crew can only use the backhoe loader and wheeled scraper machines.

 Basic Loader

This type can carry a load of a maximum of 4 tons. The basic type of loader is widely used on construction sites for the purpose mentioned above.

Tractor Mounted Loaders

This type is attached to the tractor for the purpose of performing grading and excavation works. It can be used in different ways such as dumping mud/dust, lifting heavy material, etc. It is one of the key pieces of equipment on any construction site.

Construction Site Loader

The construction site loader has one or more than one such buckets to lift the material. This bucket is usually hydraulically operated and its operator can control the bucket up and down. A front-end loader is a bucket loader attached to a forklift truck by a quick coupler.

9. Tower Cranes

The main components of a tower crane are a boom, jib, and hoist. Some of the tower cranes have a revolving boom, while some others have articulated booms. The tower crane has a telescopic jib. The tower can be erected to a height as per requirement. These cranes are very expensive but are very reliable and do not require any kind of maintenance. The working platform of these types of cranes is usually above the ground to avoid getting damaged.

These cranes are mostly used in the construction of high-rise buildings. This equipment is available in various capacities ranging from 80 t. to 400 t. Tower cranes are installed on top of the building and move on rails, and tracks to reach the required height where the loading and unloading work is done. These are not used for continuous operation, but only for temporary functions when required for the operational period.

Normally a tower crane is set up over the place where the building is being constructed. It lifts the material from ground level to a higher level. Tower cranes are more used in construction sites where the height of the building to be constructed is more than 40 meters. In the current scenario, tower cranes work in tandem with scaffolding to speed up construction activities.

The tower crane is not suitable for construction activities that involve regular lifting of goods and materials as they are more expensive to operate and maintain compared to other cranes.

Most of the tower cranes are static cranes and are land-based. These are generally used in a few large construction sites. There are different types of tower cranes in the market which can be of two types i.e. Erection tower cranes and Hoisting tower cranes. Erection tower cranes are also called riggers. These are used for assembling and dismantling structural steelwork.

There are two types of tower cranes:
Closed tower cranes
Open tower cranes
(i) Closed Tower Cranes: These types of tower cranes are enclosed and built on a concrete foundation.

10. Pile Boring Equipment

Pile boring equipment is used in the construction industry to drill soil and bore a round shape hole underground and fill in concrete in the hole.

Importance of Excavation in the Construction Industry

For the construction of residential projects, bungalow construction, and commercial projects excavation services are in large demand for digging up and removing volumes of earth or other materials for the formation of spaces beneath the earth. Excavation services for construction are essential. This includes excavation for laying the foundation for building construction, digging for construction of the compound wall, digging work for laying pipes, planting underground cables, underground water tank pits, septic tank pits, and water lines, and digging for laying drainage systems, and lift pits.
Trench excavation in construction is popular for excavating compound walls and water utility lines maintenance.
The earthmoving contractor needs to follow the procedure of excavation as per the sizes given in the earthwork drawing by the builder, RCC consultant, and architect. The soil, stones, rock, hardened concrete and waste on-site are required to be removed and taken away by using trucks. Builders will need to pay additional transportation and labor charges to move the excavated materials from the site.

Types of excavation

Earthwork rates further depend upon the type of earthworks such as Earth excavation, Topsoil excavation, Rock excavation, and Muck excavation.

Excavation Cost in India

Excavation services are expensive since the excavation contractors buy or take on rent various expensive machinery and equipment, so the services are also costly. The fuel cost, machinery maintenance, trained expert machine operator’s wages, helpers, binaries, water pouring, labor wages, and transportation, is further included in the earthwork service charges.
The cost of excavation is calculated upon the number of cubic yards of soil, stone, concrete, rock, water, scrap, herbs, and dirt that will need to be excavated and removed from the earth surface of the site.
Excavation hazards are considered based on the type of surface and underground conditions on sites such as hard soil, mud, dense soil, soft soil, cleaning of grass and vegetation, Soft Murum, hard murum, rocky terrain, Soft Rock, Hard Rock portion, the requirement of hard rock blasting, bailing out water from rains at excavation from rains, work in water or underwater, work under tidal conditions, the presence of underground water, utility water pipeline, and wiring. In other critical conditions like conjected localities, manual excavation labor needs to be deployed by excavation contractors.
As per required machinery, manpower, and the number of hours needed for the job.

An estimate of the price of the job is worked out.
Excavation cost calculator:
The standard formula to calculate the volume of excavated area:
Length X Width X Height(depth) = Volume
The volume unit for excavating is cubic meters or cubic feet.
Total excavation volume x excavation price per unit = cost of excavation.
Cost of excavation per cubic meter in India
The rate per cubic meter (m3) for earthwork excavation is around Rs 350 to 500, in India.
A hydraulic excavator can excavate 200 to 250 cubic meters of soil in one day. It’s the cost per day including driver and fuel is Rs. 5000/ to Rs 7000/.
In locations in metros and big cities like Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, and Pune, the excavation pricing is higher, as compared to prices in cities Kolhapur, Satara, Sangli, and Aurangabad. For rural location-based sites, excavation contractors’ prices are lower than in urban areas.
Small excavation contractors prefer to charge on an hourly basis and a JCB machine on-site daily service billing can be around 5000 to 7000.
Advanced techniques, tools, and machinery give fast and precise work. The clientele of the excavation contractors includes builders, RCC consultants; private contractors, government civil contractors; road contractors; plumbing consultants, and contractors.

Shovel

A shovel is another important mechanical equipment used in construction. a blade and a front blade which can be adjusted in a forward or backward direction. It can also be used in other construction works. It is a versatile construction tool.

Earthmoving Contractor Services

Excavation contractor’s services include site development, creating building foundations, land clearing, home improvement, reservoirs, bridges, digging and underground works for construction of housing projects, commercial projects, landscaping, Breaking Asphalt, Paving, clearing unwanted scrap and waste materials, wells, roads, hard rock breaking, and dredging by using tools, heavy machinery, equipment, explosives and drastically speed up the process of digging, moving soil on earth, hard rock, and bushes, and waste materials. Any construction site needs earthmoving contractors to start with earthwork. Excavation contractors execute the earth digging process as per the required size and dimensions specified by architects and engineers.

Using and handling heavy earthmoving equipment is a risky job and needs proper expertise. Specialized training is given to excavation machine operators. Only skilled operators can operate heavy machinery and equipment. Other laborers under him also need to have the know-how of earthmoving activities.

Earthwork companies provide tunneling services and underground trenching services and wall shafts. JCBs are widely used for digging a trench or interconnecting trenches in the ground; for making boundaries of the building structures, and for compound walls and laying and maintenance of pipelines, and cables.

An expert excavation contractor follows a systematic excavation process by surveying the ground soil and rock hardness, understanding the centerline, setting out the plan on the ground, and the benchmarks for all corners, and tightening the loose soil.
